Sacramento, California
River’s Side is an infill mixed use project in an emerging neighborhood across the river from downtown Sacramento. The project consists of 26 detached, zero lot line, single-family homes along with a mixed use building anchoring one of the site corners.
Circulation to the single family homes is provided by a narrow urban lane that provides passage for pedestrians and slow moving cars in the same space configured in what is sometimes referred to in Dutch as a “woonerf” The project contributes significantly to West Sacramento’s redevelopment efforts, creating a catalyst for future projects in the Washington neighborhood.

I think you may have a typo on your webpage describing “River’s Side at Washington Square”. It describes a “woonerf” as having a Danish origin when I think it should actually be “Dutch”. By the way, I found your website because I was trying to see which communities in the Sacramento area were incorporating woonerfs. So I applaud you on designing a pedestrian friendly development.

Michael,
Thank you – good catch: you are absolutely correct, and I’ve made that change to our content.
We have a number of projects we’ve completed using this same concept – whether you term it “woonerf”, or “living street” or “multi-use paved public space”. We have used these in: the Good project in West Sacramento; Metro Square (also in West Sacramento near the Good Project and River’s Side); Metro Place in Midtown Sacramento; as well as in Southside Co-housing. As a firm, we tend to maximize the multi-modal, multi-use aspects of such spaces, to help emphasize the human experince of such spaces, rather than allowing automobiles to dominate the space-planning aspect of our projects.
